چکیده

The application of the Finite Difference Time Domain technique, equipped with periodic boundary conditions, can lead to the fast full-wave characterization of negative refractive index (NRI) structures. Employing the so-called sine-cosine method, the guiding and radiating properties of the NRI transmission-line medium are determined. Surface wave effects are captured, while the operation of the medium as a leaky-wave antenna (within its fast-wave region) is also modeled. The efficiency of this approach stems from the fact that all these results are obtained by simulating up to two unit cells of the periodic NRI medium under study.

Topology and Design of Wide-Band 3D Metamaterials made of Periodically Loaded Transmission Line Arrays

We propose a new topology for realizing artificial microwave materials that exhibit a negative refractive index over a wide frequency band. These metamaterials consist of a threedimensional transmission line mesh that is loaded with reactive series and shunt elements to create negative permittivity and permeability. The cubic-cell transmission line host network is a physical realization of the ...

Advances in Time-Domain Modeling of Periodic Structures for Metamaterial Applications

The recent interest in negative refractive-index (NRI) metamaterials stems from Veselago’s early work predicting media that simultaneously exhibit negative permittivity and negative permeability. Metamaterial structures, such as split-ring resonator and stripwires and planar-loaded transmission line grids, are artificial dielectrics, made of periodically arranged inclusions. Thus, the design of...

Numerical Dispersion and Stability of an Extended FDTD Method Applied to Negative Refractive Index Media Modeling

The analogy between the FDTD Yee cell and a transmission-line network is invoked for the derivation of a scheme that lends itself to the implementation of a negative refractive index medium. Electric and magnetic currents, incorporated in the update equations, represent series capacitors and shunt inductors, which load the implicitly present transmission line network of an FDTD grid in a way th...

Microstrip Antenna Gain Enhancement using Near Zero Refractive Index Metamaterials

Some useful features of microstrip patch antennas are low profile, low weight and easy fabrication. However this type of antenna suffers from having a low gain, caused by propagation surface waves. In this paper, a new near zero refractive index metamaterial (MTM) unit cell is designed and fabricated as a superstrate over a Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antennas (RMPA). In order to obtain a maxi...

Beam oscillations and curling in chirped periodic structures with metamaterials

We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in one-dimensional chirped periodic structures composed of alternating layers of negative-index or left-handed metamaterial and conventional dielectric, under the condition of the zero average refractive index. We consider the case when the periodic structure has a linear chirp, and the chirp is introduced by varying linearly the thickness of th...
